homemade annoying game #2

Filed under: game — wessf @ 8:03 pm

annoying2.jpgHere’s another little game I created - feel free to play it on your computer or print it out for a loved one. It’s based on those circle-things-in-picture games for kids, but you circle anything that’s annoying in the picture. I couldn’t find too many things annoying in this one (only three - they’re pretty obvious, as usual), but there are many things worth commenting on. Anyway, click the thumbnail on the left to view the game, and leave a comment to make observations* about the picture.

*observations . . . in this case mispronouncing, “clever and ironic statements for the sake of entertaining one another in the broad scope of living out creative lives.”

recent movie rental reviews

Filed under: Movie Reviews — wessf @ 1:20 am

I can’t remember the last time the wife and I saw a movie at the theater - still not long enough in my opinion but ages ago according to the wife, I’m sure. We watch movies through Netflix on a regular basis, however, and just for the fun of it, I thought I’d toss out my two cents on a few movies that caught my eye.

The Departed was probably the most anticipated according to my sources [various podcasts and online news outlets]. I thought it was a good movie - I had seen Infernal Affairs, the film The Departed was retelling, and found The Departed to be the better film [maybe because it was in English and had numerous familiar faces] - but it wasn’t as great as I expected it to be.

I almost did not rent Deja Vu [based on the unfavorable reviews of my sources]. This would have been a mistake ’cause I enjoyed this movie. It dips it’s foot into science fiction [as opposed to supernatural as the trailers seemed to imply] and would have possibly been even better if it had leaned more into that genre. Denzel was probably, for me, what pushed this film from a flimsy flop to a gripping . . . go-getter [best I could come up with]. (more…)

my new favorite dictionary site

Filed under: Favorite websites — wessf @ 10:42 pm

As you may know, Google has a built in dictionary search - type in “define:” followed by the word you need defined and Google returns with an array of dictionary options. This is very handy and it’s all well and good, but this is not the site I was going to mention. My new favorite dictionary website is NinjaWords.com - check it out. It’s simple and fast [much like Google] and although it doesn’t have many extras . . . well, it’s simple and fast!

Here’s an even better thing: using Firefox [you are using Firefox, aren't you?] you can install the Dictionary Search extension and configure it to use NinjaWords.com instead of or in addition to the default dictionary site. Excellent, I say. Simple and fast.

switching to linux, part two

switching, part one

part two - the transition

Cold turkey has it’s benefits, I suppose. Cut the cord and make it work. My brother, Joshua, did just that at the end of last year. I think, more than anything, he was just ready for a change. After telling him some of the benefits of Linux and letting him play with the live cd for a bit he said something to the effect of, “okay, how do we do this? What’s next?” It was so sudden I found myself backpedaling a little, asking him, “are you sure you want to switch?”, and going through a mental checklist, looking for any reason he should not go through with it. Finding very little, I relented, and we installed Ubuntu. (more…)
