Echoes and Shadows

Posted on by Wess Foreman

An interesting, quirky painting that started from a simple reference photo of a crowd on the street. The final touch that made it work for me, ultimately, was the addition of the shadows on the walls and abstract figures hidden in the clouds. I bounced around several titles, finally landing on the current one which somehow works (might start a new series based on this one).

a jester's lament

I was staring at a blank canvas. A large blank canvas. I was ready to paint, but I was out of ideas (or rather, I had too many ideas and none of them very good). So I was browsing through reference photos and ran across a photo of a small 14x11" painting I had done not too long ago and decided it needed to be painted big . . . posthaste! A few hours later and I present: A Jester's Lament. Let me know if you like it---especially if you think I should paint more in this series.

the aerialist

I have a handful of circus snapshots I took three or four years ago that I've been meaning to convert into a series of paintings. This is one of those, finally realized. The reference photo was taken horizontally but of course this vertical format works much better for the subject matter.

This one falls more on the illustration side of things. I wanted to paint a simple painting of a kid running with zero background detail and was happy with how this turned out . . . then I added a cape to the kid and that made the painting work for me even more, adding a bit of a story to the piece.

Used an old 1908 public domain photo titled "Portrait of Mrs. White" by Clarence H. White as the reference photo for this painting. I liked the look of the original roughed-in painting---which reminded me of an old french poster---so I kept the blue outlining and left out any detail work.

Captive Audience #15

Originally painted a couple years ago, this colorful painting has been hiding away in my garage awaiting a stretcher-bar replacement procedure as its old stretcher bars were somewhat warped. I've finally re-stretched and touched up the piece and now it's ready to present once again. One of my favorites.
